CINEMA: Children Will Love This Superhero

October 15th, 2008 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Hrithik Roshan

Abishek (right) and Priyanka in Drona.

NOW SHOWING

DRONA (Hindi)

Directed by Goldie Behl

Starring Abishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Kay Kay Menon, Jaya Bachchan

AFTER watching this movie, you will realise that Indian movie-makers should stick to what they know best - heart - rending family dramas or love stories.

Fantasy such as Drona doesn’t always work.

Krishh, with Hrithik Roshan as a superhero, was a success because he fit the character and the story was interesting.

On the other hand, Drona is dreadfully slow and I don’t understand why Abishek needs to look so sullen throughout the movie.
The villain (Kay Kay Menon) grates on your nerves, always talking to his forefinger and two puppets.

The only bright spot in the movie is Priyanka in her beautiful costumes. She may not look all that convincing with a sword but at least she is gorgeous even when filmed in the Rajasthan desert or on horseback.

Drona has been described as Abishek’s Waterloo but he has performed poorly before in movies such as Yuva and Bunty Aur Babli.

All he needs is a good director and story to bring out the best in him.

There is still hope for Abishek and he has legions of fans rooting for him.

In Drona, Abishek plays the eponymous superhero destined to save the world.

He is hidden away as a child and grows up to become an ordinary shopkeeper in an unknown land.

Just as he is asking himself the meaning of his life, he meets magician Riz Raizada (Kay Kay). His life then changes.

He is pursued by the magician’s sidekicks and finds that a special group of men and bodyguard Sonia (Priyanka) have been keeping his identity a secret and have been sworn to protect him.

His destiny takes him on a journey to discover who he really is and what he has to do to defeat the magician.

What could have been an exhilarating journey becomes long-winded and uninteresting under the direction of Goldie Behl (Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai).

Firstly, the hero could have been a fun guy and secondly, the pace could have been faster.

That would mean at least one song less at the beginning showing our hero dancing with European girls and less scenes involving the magician.

Just how the comic magician is a menace to the world and his intentions are not explained properly.

I like the scenes where blue rose petals follow the hero whenever he is lonely.

A fair amount of computer magic has been decently employed in this RM43.6 million movie.

A car chase and another scene involving a train are memorable although such stunts are aplenty in movies.

I couldn’t shake off the feeling that I was watching a fantasy for children. I had this same feeling while watching recent movies such as Bhootnath and Love Story 2050.

It would be nice if the movie was rated so adults can give it a wide berth and leave the children to enjoy it.

MTV Mahu Satukan SRK, Hrithik, Aamir?

September 24th, 2008 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan
