Sunny Deol gives a stirring erformance as an injured air force pilot.
YOU will definitely be drawn to this movie because it stars Salman Khan and Preity Zinta. But these two top-drawing stars only have subsidiary, albeit important, roles in this film.
The main story is about two Film Academy students Saand (Sohail Khan) and Nawab (Vatsal Seth) who go on a road trip on their motorcycle to do a documentary on why people should NOT join the army.
They get hold of “letters” written by combatants before they meet their deaths. They take it upon themselves to deliver them and film what happens to the soldiers’ families.
It turns out to be a journey of discovery for the two young men. Instead of finding the families bitter about their loss, they are actually proud of their loved ones who gave up their lives to defend the country.
This discovery changes the carefree duo for the better and in fact makes them more patriotic.
Salman plays a Sikh soldier who dies for his country while Preity is his wife who has to shoulder the burden of taking care of the family, their farm and young son.
Mithun Chakraborty plays a father who cannot bear the loss of his son (Dino Morea).
But the most impressive of the stellar cast is Sunny Deol, who takes the role of a former air force pilot who is grounded after an injury. He loses his only brother (Bobby Deol) in a war.
The scenes in which Sunny appear make you sit up. He is inspirational on screen.
The director fails to show how the documentary turns out in the end. Some inspirational words from the two youngsters in the documentary would have been nice.
The songs are there to provide some ‘oomph’ to the story. That is when you see sexy Riya Sen and Amrita Arora appearing with other dancers.
The lack of proper subtitles is a big handicap. If they want more people to watch Hindi movies, the distributors must only buy movies with complete subtitles as Hindi movies are enjoyed by all races.
There are many touching and memorable scenes in this movie about the armed forces personnel which should not be missed.
Director Samir Karnik, whose previous two movies Mera Kyun Ho Gaya Na and Nanhe Jaisalmer were not hits, deserves praise for this movie.
The stellar cast is backed by a good story, wonderful acting and wonderful cinematography. It is not a war movie but how society views the armed forces. Go see it as such movies don’t come that often.
